The NPD Group has published its June 2022 report on video games hardware, software, and accessories retail sales across the US.
According to the NPD report, the total videogame industry spending fell 9% from year-to-year (YoY) to $4.18 billion. Spending for the year to date fell 10 percent to $30.5 billion and subscription content remains the sole major category of spending that is growing.
In July the hardware sales rose by 12% year-over-year to $362 million. However, spending for the year to date on hardware decreased by 7 percent up to $2.5 billion.
PlayStation 5 led the market in terms of hardware sales between the months of July and 2022. The switch was the top seller during both times. In both cases, PS5 as well as Xbox Series X/S saw double-digit percentage increases year-over-year.
MultiVersus was among the top-selling software title in July thanks to its Founder’s Packs sales. Warner Bros. published two of the top three top-selling games of the month and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in third place.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 debuted as the fourth highest-selling game in July, despite sales for digital versions not being included. It was the highest-selling game in July on the Nintendo Switch.

To play on mobile the most popular games for spending are Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Coin Master, Pokemon GO, Evony: The King’s Return, Royal Match, Bingo Blitz, Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle, Jackpot Party, and Homescapes.
Accessories dropped by 22% during July when compared to July 2021when they reached $148 million. A decrease in the use of gamepads led to the decrease. This is the PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black was the best-selling accessory in July however, it’s the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller is the top accessory year-to-date in dollar sales.
